International Argentine Tango Choreography Competition 2008
The winning couple will receive:
- $2000 US prize money
- Invitations to perform in several major
international tango festivals
- Performances at major tango venues in Buenos Aires
- Gift certificates from tango shoe, clothing and
music shops
The competition is open to all tango dance
couples without any restriction as to age,
nationality, gender or style of tango dancing.
Entries should be made in the form of a DVD (PAL or
NTSC) and accompanied by the ATDRC Choreography
Competition entry form provided below.

Entries must be received on or before September 15, 2008.
All finalists will receive a written critique of their
choreography from the panel of internationally
recognized professional tango artisits from various
countries who will judge the competition.
Finalists will be chosen at the end of September and
notified by e-mail. The winning couple will be awarded
their prizes at the end of October 2008 at a location
and date to be announced.

Rules of Admission
1. The choreography must be made for two people and
performed by two people. The piece can not be a solo
nor a group piece.
2. The choreography must be made and executed to a
piece of music not less than 2 minutes and
not longer than 8 minutes in duration.
3. The piece must be a single piece, meaning it can
not be part of a larger body of work.
4. The two people dancing must remain connected in
relevance with the usual parameters recognized as
the Argentine Tango in the world today.
5. In the case where the choreographer/s is/are not one
of the dancers performing the choreography, then the
prize money will be divided 75% and 25% between the
choreographer/s and the dancers.
6. There will be no restrictions regarding the age, nationality or genter of the participants and neither to the style of tango dancing nor the music chosen for the choreography.
7. The top 20 choreographies selected in the competition will be included in a DVD that ATDRC will
produce for sale with the objective of promoting not only dancers and choreographers, but also to promote and develope the choreographic composition within the world of tango as a dance discipline.
8. Required material to enter into the competition:
A. The choreography must be submitted in the form of a DVD by September 15, 2008. The video recording must made according to the following rules:
- Only one camera should be used for the recording.
- It should be made in one continuous recording with
no editing.
- No special effects may be used.
-The recording should be well-lit and clearly visible.
B. The DVD must be accompanied by the 'ATDRC Choreography Competition 2008 Entry Form' which is found below.
C. The material should be sent by September 15, 2008 to:

9. By signing, the participants accept the following:
A. The DVD will not be returned and will become the property of the Video Archives of ATDRC.
B. ATDRC reserves the right to use the material submitted for the competition for promotional purposes of the competition and the Research Center.

Criteria of Analysis for Judging the Competition
A. Choreographic Composition
1. Composite Balance
- Unity: The unity of the piece as a whole will be taken into consideration.
- Continuity: The logical continuity of the choreographed structure throughout the entire piece will be taken into consideration.
- Clarity: The clarity with which the ideas and choreographic concepts are conveyed through the piece will be taken into consideration.
- Balance of Tensions: The balance and equilbrium within the contrasts provoked by the different levels of tension achieved by the
choreography throughout the piece will be taken into consideration.
2. Choreographic Ideas
- New Ideas: The originality of the
creation of the new choreographic ideas, figures
or simple movements will be taken into consideration.
- Traditional ideas: The use of the
choreographic ideas, figures and movements already
familiar in the tango, including those which are
popularly characterized traditional or new, will be taken into consideration.
3. Choreographic Narration
The existing relationship within the
choreographic ideas including in the piece will be taken into consideration.
4. Line of Force
The quality within the relationship
established between the choreography and the music of
choice will be taken into consideration.
5. Rhythmical Application
The quality and choice of different rhytmic elements used will be taken into consideration.
6. Use of the Dance Space
The use of the available space for the realization of the choreographed work will be taken into consideration.
B. Choreographic Execution
1. Musicality: Adjustment of the dancing to the music will be taken into consideration.
2. Dynamic: Quality of movement, density, texture, potential, speed, etc, will be taken into consideration.
3. Connection in between the couple: Quality of the 'relationship of movement' between the two dancers, the ability to lead and follow will be taken into consideration.
